The abolitionist did not help the war start, actually, the Civil War started because of States' Rights, Slavery, and Sectionalism/seccession. They could fall under the category of slavery but they were only a mild influence.

What did the abolitionists try to end before the civil war?

They were trying to end slavery altogether, though this did not look hopeful, as the Abolitionists were vocal but not very numerous. Meanwhile their objectives were to ban any new slave-states in the Western territories. This would have meant the South being increasingly out-voted in Congress, which would pass laws hostile to Southern interests. It was this quarrel that led to the Civil War. And it was the war - not Abolitionist debate - that led to the end of slavery.
