It hurt the south's economy by the union blockading southern ports, so it cant trade with other countries during the civil war because they needed the cotton, the resources that the slaves grew or worked on.

During the Civil War, the Southern economy was severely weakened by a blockade that the North (the Union states) placed on the Southern ports. The North sent their ships on the Confederacy's coast lines to block their exits while also blocking any trade or imports. The imports and trades were a very important part of the Southern economy because that was how they made money on their many crops. If they harvested their crops and did not want to sell them to the North and were not able to sell it to other countries via trade ports, then they lost profits with time.

Ruined it. The farms were despoiled by endless troop movements (nearly all the battles were in the South). The blockade prevented them from exporting their cotton in exchange for war supplies. The Confederate dollar plummeted to near zero value. And Sherman's march through Georgia and South Carolina was the final humiliation, wrecking the transport infrastructure, and destroying civilian morale.

definitely YES! definitely YES! It messed it up fairly bad. The post-civil war south was less wealthy than the north due to loss of men, loss of resources, and the loss of slave labor.
