A baron is anyone that has a great amount of wealth and influence in a specific area. The phrase was established by political pundit Matthew Josephson in a book written during the Great Depression, and it was applied to successful business that existed during the period of time at the end of the 19th century and after the Civil War called the Gilded Age. This was a period of rapid industrialization and economic growth. During this time, the oil and railroad companies became controlled by a select few - the "robber barons." These included John D. Rocekfeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan. Through corrupt and manipulative tactics, these businessmen were supposedly controlling their respective industries by robbing the common people of their wealth.
