The question assumes that the Spanish played a positive role in the development of the country. They did not. The Spanish brought disease which killed off most of the native Taino population, they enslaved the rest, exploiting them to work producing agricultural products such as sugar cane and tobacco. Their excuse for doing this? Bringing Catholic Christianity. The Spanish also brought corrupt government, which florishes in the Dominican Republic and other former Spanish-exploited countries in Latin America.
