The Donner Party revealed what could happen, if things went wrong. Previous stories were always about the wonderful things that could happen when settlers went west, such as adventure and the possibility of finding one's destiny. The story of the Donner Party showed the dark side. The tale of cannibalism, and the loss of nearly half the party, took much of the glamour away from going west.
In the 1840s, Americans view of the west was extremely skewed. They viewed the west as this dream place with abundant land, riches, and a place to make anew. In reality (and what the Donner Party helped to show) was that the West was often a cruel and unforgiving place. Those who "struck it rich" did so purely on luck. The view of the West changed greatly after the news of the Donner Party reached the rest of the U.S.
