The Taino were the dominant tribe in the islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Quisquella, Boriken. These are all large and mountinous islands. Many Taino women escaped slavery by marrying European men. 40% of the Spaniards in Santo Domingo were married by the Catholic church to Taino women. Once married to a Spaniard , the woman and her children could never be sold as slaves, often even her parents and siblings were set free. This mixing also saved the next generation because the children often inhereted inmunity to European diseases from their father. Other Taino ran into the mountains, where they remained free for generations. Other Tainos fled to other surrounding small islands and after the wars requested the church and goverment permission to return to the main islands. This was granted as proved with the census of 1798 in Puerto Rico where 3000 indians living in the San German area were said to be the descendants of indians who had fled to Mona island during the wars and later granted land in Puerto Rico. Taino slavery lasted officially only 40 years and not every indian was made a slave, illness killed many yet those that survived began to re-populate the islands once they intergrated to the colonial system. This is why according to DNA studies the average amount of Taino blood in todays Puerto Rican is 15%. Some of course have as high as 30% and a smaller number have higher than 50%.
