If you mean the TV show The Walking Dead, it was a virus of some sort. We know this because of the sixth episode of season 1, "TS-19." When the group reach the CDC, they are met by Dr. Edwin Jenner, the last Survivor. Jenner takes blood to test from each of the group members. While there, Jenner shows the group the video footage of Test Subject 19 (his wife after she becomes infected). The spread of the virus becomes evident as Jenner's wife dies, then becomes reanimated, and then is shot.
This takes some time to unfold, but with the last episode of season two, "Beside the Dying Fire," Rick shares the secret whispered to him by Jenner when he opens the doors of the CDC before it explodes; all of the living are infected.
