How did the word Oz come to mean Australia other than the similar sound and does it have any relation to The Wizard of Oz?

Australia -> Aus -> Oz.
I'm pretty sure it's just similar sound.. :) There is absolutely no connection between Australia and the Wizard of Oz. However, in 1992, Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating was dubbed "The Lizard of Oz" after he put his arm around Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Australia.
