Trajan was praised by Roman writers for being a wise and fair emperor and a man of moral integrity. Even the medieval Christians praised him. Thomas Aquinas, saw Trajan as an example of a virtuous pagan. Pope Gregory I, was aid to have resurrected Trajan through divine intercession and baptized him into the Christian faith.

There was the legend called the Justice of Trajan which was popular for many centuries. It is based on an account of the Roman historian Cassius Dio who wrote: "[Trajan] did not, however, as might have been expected of a warlike man, pay any less attention to the civil administration nor did he dispense justice any the less; on the contrary, he conducted trials…" the story tells that while he was busy preparing for a war, Trajan was petioned for justice by the mother of a murdered man. Trajan told her to wait until he returned, but she pointed out that he might not return at all. Therefore, he settled the matter straight away despite being very busy with the preparations. The legend was depicted by several famous painters. It also featured in Dante's Divine Comedy.
