During the California "Gold Rush" in 1849, there were approximately 500,000 men from the east coast searching for gold. Women from the east coast of the US numbered only in the hundreds. California was LAWLESS; with shootings, hangings, and claim jumping (stealing another prospector's mining rights/robbery). Most, if not all of the women were located in the civilized regions of large cities...San Francisco, etc. And they were small in number. After the Gold Rush in the early 1850's, women arrived from the east coast via stage/wagon train/and steamers (ships). LAW & ORDER came with them...civilization!
