The US did not join WWI until late in the war, when a German submarine sunk a British passenger ship (the Lusitania), which killed 128 US citizens (out of 1,198 people). Because of this, the US had the least amount of casualties out of all the countries that fought during WWI - a total of 116,000 out of 65 million.

However, there were many new weapons introduced like tanks and poison gas. But they only killed more people more efficiently. Trench warfare was used, which was a form of fighting where opposing armies fought each other from parallel trenches, dug into the battlefield. With poison gas, some soldiers were killed, but others lived with extreme disabilities.
