Ask him to go with you on a casual basis A lot of same sex friends go places together. However if you want to put the hard word on him, then I would try to deal with it a bit more carefully. Over time make him under stand which way you think until you get to a point where you can discuss these things without fear of losing your friend. This can take time however.
