It can be almost impossible to help someone with suicidal ideation or suicidal thoughts. But the best indicator of how much help you can get the person is their age. Anyone under the age of 18 in most states, and 14 in other states, can be treated if an adult seeks treatment for the minor. For individuals over the age of 18, it can be extremely difficult to get the person treatment. If the individual does not believe they are in need of treatment, the individual can reject treatment. The only thing mental health professionals, friends, and family can do is encourage the person to seek treatment. This is a very big dilemma for families across the nation and one of the reasons why so many are advocating for change in state laws. Our current state laws, primiarily in states that do not implement Assisted Outpatient Treatment, prevent appropriate and timely treatment.
