Mormons, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) believe that they can perform religious sacraments on behalf of their deceased ancestors and give them the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ in the afterlife. This is viewed as a selfless act of service, and many Mormons find fulfillment in knowing that they are able to give their ancestors the Gospel of Jesus Christ in return for all that their ancestors have done for them. However, this requires that they know who their ancestors were. To do that, they must use genealogy.

All the genealogical information that the Mormon Church receives is made available to the public through its genealogy service, FamilySearch.org, and it's local FamilySearch Libraries.

Please see the "Related Links" below to learn more about why Mormons do genealogy work.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) operates familysearch.org. This is considered by many to be one of the leading free genealogy sites. The Church also operates hundreds of free "Family History Centers" where anyone is welcome to recieve free assistance with their family history, as well as have access to familysearch.org, the Church's extensive Family History Library, and several subscription-based genealogy sites (such as ancestry.com) free of charge. I would start at Ancestry.com . When I decided to do mine, I typed in all the information I knew and discovered one line had already been traced back hundreds of years. If you have a local Mormon church you can check with them. The Mormons do a lot of genealogy.

Why is the LDS church so fascinated by genealogy?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) are interested in Family History and Genealogy because they believe it is their responsibility to introduce all people to salvation through Jesus Christ. Mormons believe that by seeking out their ancestors, they can perform vicarious baptisms on their behalf. When a Mormon performs a baptism in behalf of one of their ancestors, it is believed that the ancestor will have an opportunity to accept or reject the baptism and the gospel of Jesus Christ before judgement. It is in this way that Mormons can offer the opportunity of salvation to those who have already died. You can learn more about Mormons and their beliefs about genealogy at the "Related Links" below.

What is a genealogy record?

Genealogy is the study of a person's family history, so a genealogy record would be anything that relates to that study or provides information about a person. Genealogists use records like birth certificates, wills, family Bibles, yearbooks, newspapers, headstones, and a variety of other sources. If it has information about a person or his/her family history, it's a genealogy record.
