Best Answer

Airplanes need to generate lift in order to take off and fly. The way they do this is to go fast enough on the ground so that the air passing over the wings generates lift in accordance with Bernoulli's principle. When sufficient speed is attained to generate the necessary lift, the plane will fly.

Why do airplanes need so much speed to take off?

Airplanes need a lot of speed to take off because they are not designed for vertical takeoff and are to heavy to do so.

Why do airplanes appear to slow down after takeoff?

As the distance between the viewer and the plane increases the Plane appears to slow down.

Do airplanes take off against the wind?

Yes, airplanes always fly into the wind. It decreases the length required to takeoff because the net airspeed over the wings is higher. Logistically though, sometimes airports won't swap directions for a wind speed that's relatively small.

How do airports ensure that runways are safe to takeoff and land on?

Runways are created with enough space to ensure that airplanes have plenty of room to take off and land, even in adverse weather. They are kept clean and free of obstacles that might get in the way of planes mid-takeoff. They're also inspected regularly by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration).

Why do airplanes need a long runway for landing and takeoff?

Not all need a long runway. The take off length depends on a number of factored such as weather wind speed, weight of aircraft, power of engines.
