Interestingly enough, before it became the Furniture Capital of the US (which it no longer is), Grand Rapids, Michigan was the Button Capital of the US. In the old factories along the Grand River through downtown, you can still find in the sub-basements piles of fresh water clam shells full of holes. Clams were harvested from the river, opened and emptied, and the shells were drilled on button presses. These were polished and packaged and shipped around the world.
Now buttons are primarily injection molded with plastics.
