Curiosity. No, I'm not kidding. Cats arae very alike humans in two ways in particular,:
1. They have an insatiable sense of curiosity
2. They are affected by reverse psychology, (whatever they can't do, they want to do.)
Cats can climb up to the door handle and push it down with their paw, which opens the door.
They are trying to get your attention, to either let them outside, or let them back in.
AnswerDogs can purr like cats. I've heard my dog purr before. Dogs can make about ten sounds like purr, growl, bark, wimper, yawn, and howl, but those are just a few.

With my cats we got told that if the cats are moving in and they have never lived with you or in that house before then keep them inside with all doors and windows shut for 2 weeks making sure they have food, water and a cosy place to sleep. However, if they were originally your cats and you're just moving into a new home, 1 week should be fine for them to settle in. I hope that was the answer you were looking for (:
Cat's hate the smell of citric smelling items. I took some orange peels and rubbed em on the cabinet doors and drawers to keep em out. I took my hand (with the citric orange smell) and approached my cat. He immediately pulled back. Smells good, keeps em out...win/win scenario.
Not really. They can grunt but I've never heard of one that could wimper.

Yes, many cats cats are usually happy to be able to freely roam outside, just the same as a lot of cats will prefer (given the choice) to stay indoors.
Cats can be very happy living in doors it's entire life. You might need to give the cat more attention if kept in doors as cats need to play. I have 3 cats one of which has never gone outside. She is very happy playful cat never trying to go outside when my other cats do.
Keeping the doors and windows closed suffices for most people.
