Most species of starfish expel enormous numbers of eggs and sperm into the ocean fertilization is external. After fertilazation, the tiny, transparent, bilaterally-symmetrical larvae travel many miles as they are swept along by ocean currents for about two months. As they develop, the tiny larvae swim in the sea, eat phytoplankton, and are a component of zooplankton.

Seastars do not have brains and therefore do not have the capacity to "care" for young.

The mother coelacanth keeps the fertilized eggs within her body for over a year. The eggs hatch inside her, and the fully formed young coelacanths emerge, ready to fend for themselves.

Seahorses don't care for their babies, who are automatically forced to survive by instincts in the ocean. Weird fact: the male seahorse carries the eggs instead of the female.
