Use the Eclipse IDE instead... Visual Studio's only for C/C++ language programs.

Notepad, or any other text editor. If you have the compiler installed, you can run the programs on the Command Prompt. I recommend blueJ because it does not require a compiler to already be downloaded though.

This could be an issue with the Microsoft Firewall that is present. You may have this program on and not need it, causing issues in the connection.
