Even though Tet is a celebration of the new year, the holiday lasts 2-3 weeks. Families reunite across the country in an effort to celebrate together. It is believed that the three kitchen spirits ascend to the sky to meet with the celestial Jade Emperor in order to report the good and bad things about the family. If the report is good, the family will receive luck throughout the year.

Vietnamese people clean and prepare family alters with fresh food, incense, money, and flowers, etc. in order to welcome familial spirits back into the house.

This is also the time when families perform "spring cleaning," buy new clothes, and pay off debts.

Families buy kumquat trees, or pink peach blossom trees in the northern region, or apricot blossom trees in the south.

This is an expensive holiday with many meals shared, and gifts of red envelopes given to younger generations by adults. This is considered "lucky" money. Red is considered a lucky color in Vietnam. Employees also get bonuses at this time.

On actual New Year's Day, the cities will provide parades and fireworks. Personal fireworks were banned in Vietnam in 1995. Traditionally, people take great care to do everything that will bring them luck. For example, the first person who comes to your house on New Year's day should be a person of importance and wealth. I've heard that women and especially pregnant women bring bad luck if they are the first through the door.

If traveling during this time, expect to be bored. It's not a boisterous holiday, but a time of family togetherness. Many shops are closed as people travel to their home villages. Major cities like Hanoi and Saigon do still stay lively at this time.
