I'm assuming the 2001 model is identical to the 2002, 2003 and 2004 models. These instructions are written according to the layout of a 2003 model. Check the pictures in the Related Links section before proceeding to see if these instructions are relevant to your model. Tools required: * Flat-head screwdriver
Look inside your trunk, right behind where your brake lights are mounted on the outside. Toward the top of your trunk is a small gray circle inside a larger gray circle. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up the smaller circle; you don't have to pry it out completely.
Once it's sticking out, pry up the larger circle and remove it completely.
Now you need to pull the crappy excuse for upholstery away from the brake light assembly. Only pull it as little as you need to be able to see and work with the assembly, because it's a major pain to try to mold that lining back into the shape it was before you started.
You should be able to see two gray, quarter to half-dollar sized, cylinder-looking things with wires coming out of them. That's the wiring harness; there are two on each side of the car (since there are two bulbs on each side). Twist it and it should come out easily; if you're forcing it you're doing something wrong.
To remove the old bulb from the harness you need to treat it like a bottle of Tylenol-- push in, twist, then pull out. Again, it should come out easily; do not force anything. Broken bulbs are even more difficult to remove.
With the new bulb in the harness, work your way back through the steps.
