While your charcoal is burning and heating up, leave the grate on the grill. When the fire dies down, use a wire grill brush to clean the grate well. It's good to brush oil over the surface; this helps in seasoning the grill so the meat doesn't stick. Don't use a lot of oil, or it will drip onto the hot coals and catch fire. You only need a light coating. When your charcoal is covered in ash, it's time to put the burgers on.

If they are in between 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick about 5 -10 minutes depending how well done you like it

At 5 minutes open the grill and make a small slit to see how well done it is and if you are not happy with it go for a few more minutes

If you have a charcoal grill, leave the rack on while the charcoal is burning and heating up. This will get your grill rack really hot. Once it's hot, use a wire grill brush to clean the rack. When the flame dies down, very lightly brush a coat of oil on the rack.

If your grill is gas, leave the rack on until it's hot and do the same as stated above for a charcoal grill.

When you lay your burgers on the grill, don't move them for several minutes. They will stick at first, and as they cook, they can be more easily unseated from the rack. It's best to let them cook halfway through before turning them.
