It seems the expert is Michael A. Gordon who wrote a book "The Orange Riots: Political Violence in New York City, 1870 and 1871." I found your question while researching my genealogy. One set of my great-grandparents arrived in NYC from Ireland on July 12, 1871 on the Harvest Queen. I have a hand-written note that says the ship "was kept in Castle Gardens until the 13th on account of riots in N.Y. City." If you want more info try using Google, or any other search engine, and use "orange riots 1871" or something similar. There is quite a bit of information to be found.
The two sides were the Orange Order, who were Protestants, and the Greens who were Roman Catholics. Religious intolerance brought to America from Ireland.

There are 2010-1871, or 139 years between 1871 and 2010.That is measuring differentially. If you mean to treat the years as a set, [1871-2010], and you mean "not the end points" when you say "between", then the number of years in the set [1872-2009] or (1871-2010) is 138.
