Keep hen on her nestWe had this problem once. We had a nest full of fertilized eggs and the hen wouldn't stay on the nest b/c she was being distracted by the handsome roo. She would sit there unless he came prancing by, then up she would get...so we locked her in her box for the full 21 days with food and water ofcourse, and enough room to walk around, this did the trick!! We got 8 babies out of it. Since then we havent had to "lock" her up. I think where it was her first "batch" she wasn't sure what to do. Now she goes to the nest after laying about 10-13 eggs and hatches on her own. :)

there may be more than one reason to why hens are not laying eggs. one might be that they don't have enough light another might be that they are overfed. i am sure there are many more reasons.

you cant create a chicken that is broody. They have to have the instinct. You can encourage her to go broody by placing eggs under her and letting her sit on them

Mallard duck nesting on about 17 duck eggs and 3 chicken eggs should remove the baby chicks from her when hatched so she will stay on the duck eggs until they hatch?

:: Answer place here (by supervisor) from discussion page;: That is way to many eggs for one duck to hatch. 8-12 is about the largest number of eggs for a nest. The mother will more than likely leave the duck eggs when most of the chicks hatch. I am not sure if you remove the chicks if she will stay sitting each duck is different. Some will stay with the nest to try to hatch the rest of the eggs but other will leave the nest completely. If it were me I would decide now which I wanted most, the ducklings or the chicks. : When ever you mess with a ducks nest she can give up on the nest and not hatch any of them after she has been sitting.

An unfertilized egg is what?

Food. Chickens will lay eggs even without a rooster around. Non fertile eggs are abandoned in the nest in which they are laid. Eggs can stay there until the hen decides to either find a new nest, a predator finds the nest or she rolls them out of the nest.

Can you move a nest of chicken eggs to a safer place?

Would a chicken trying to hatch eggs separate the bad from the good and only sit on the good?

No The hen has no idea which eggs are fertile or not. Once the chicks hatch the broody hen will roll out the bad eggs to clean the nest and make room for the chicks to stay warm and safe.

What is the gestation period for bandy chickens eggs?

21 days after the hen starts to stay on the clutch. A broody hen may take several days to gather enough eggs to brood so do not count the days she is not staying on the nest. There is no difference between the incubation time for a bantam chicken and a standard sized chicken.

Will a rooster set on a hen egg?

A broody hen will start to collect eggs from all over the chicken coop. She will stay in the nest during the day when the other birds are out scratching around and she will get nasty. Putting your hand into the nest with a broody hen risks your hands to some abuse by the protective mother bird as she will peck your hand.

How many days chicken eggs can stay with out refrigerate before incubating?
