There is a form you have to fill out from the SS administration. If you are disabled your doctor has to submit some sort of evidence. They interview you.

It's a long and tedious bureaucratic process, but if your disability is real, don't worry. I had no trouble. I advised a fiend and she had no trouble. There are lawyers who advertise that they will help you get SS disability. Judging from my experience, you don't need a lawyer if you have a real disability.

If you believe you are disabled and you apply but get turned down that's the time to see a lawyer.
