I've been in the business for 40 years, as my father was an antique dealer. Traditionally, you learned from someone you knew, someone who might mentor you, or conversely, you just hung out a shingle, opened, and hoped for the best. This last option can be expensive, because without a mentor, and a lifetimes worth of antique and collectible knowledge, you're going to end up making expensive mistakes. I was fortunate to have someone teach me the ropes... but today, you can also take courses and classes on the subject. Forty years ago, that didn't exist. One of the programs I've had the chance to examine is the one offered from the Asheford Institute Of Antiques. It's a pretty heady program for someone just starting out, but if you're really serious about getting into the business then I'd check them out. They start right from the beginning with things like historical styles, periods etc., and move all the way up to appraising. I'm not sure where they're located, but if you Google them, I'm sure you'll find out. If you're just getting into the business, they're worth a look in my opinion.
