After you pick up the mess spray foaming carpet cleaner on it and let it sit over night. In the morning sweep the floor and spray a foaming carpet deodoriser.
Baking soda works well, too.
Cheap and simple, white distilled vinegar use diluted from around 30% to full strength if very bad. The science behind it, is that bacteria brakes down the urea into ammonia, hence smell. As the the vinegar is acidic it kills the bacteria, and neutralizes the ammonia. Job done! Just do the usual color fast test first but I've never had a problem with carpets or soft furnishings as we had an old dog that pee'd a lot and that was the only thing that worked.
I was used against the black plague as a deodorizer as it was believed that disease was spread by smell. But little did they know, it killed off the plague as it is antibacterial.
While there are many commercial products designed to treat pet odors, they often do not eliminate the bacteria that are causing the odor in the first place. Baking soda and peroxide can often fully take care of the problem.

You can get rid of old bloody chicken liver smell, spilled on your carpet, by scrubbing the carpet with hot soapy water. After the carpet has dried apply fabric softener.
To get rid of spilled egg smell in the trunk carpet first remove all the egg residue. Next, use a carpet cleaner on the carpet. Lastly, spray the area with an odor eliminator like Febreeze.

A disinfectant may be used to get rid of roach smell. It can be sprayed in visible feces and wiped up or in crevices where they usually hide. It is also a good idea to seal up the crevices to get rid of the smell once the roaches are gone.
If the smell is in a litter box, thoroughly empty and clean the cat box. Use soap, water, and then let it soak in a bleach solution for a time. Rinse. Use a good quality multi-cat clumping litter.
