But in general, there are books you can buy that correlate serial number ranges to years of production, and if the book isn't available/too expensive, most gunmakers are pretty friendly and will look it up in the factory books and tell you the production date if you email them the serial number. If the company that made it no longer exists, your best bet is finding a brand-specific internet forum and hoping somebody there has access to the factory's serial # = date books.
