Squirrels in fact do not like metal, (aluminum, copper) your best chance of survival is aluminum foil around the stems of plants, trees etc. Bulbs can be protected by copper nails(if they still make them). Metal Fencing around your garden might really train these little guys to stay away.
It's difficult to chase away wildlife from a food source. One way's to plant what they don't like, such as poinsettia. The color red can be a poisonous-to-eat warning that's recognized by wildlife, but necessarily by children and pets. Another way's to lure them to another spot with a squirrel feeder. And another's to have pets that are allowed to go outside, or that aren't kept inside. Particularly larger dogs can be intimidating, and even fatal, to squirrels.

I've had the BEST LUCK WITH THESE. RE-APPLY after they melt from the rain. Do this for about 2 months. That'll get you through their season.

Sprinkle the flower pots with Cayenne Pepper not only does that stop the squirrels but rabbits, also.
Apparently ammonia sprinkled on some old fabric will deter them. However, I'd be worried about the smell spoiling one's enjoyment of the flowers.
