This can be quite difficult as a theme is often disguised, hidden, or made purposely obtuse.
To determine a story's theme, look for recurring patterns, symbols, or messages throughout the narrative. Consider the characters' actions, the plot's progression, and the overall message conveyed by the author. Think about what broader ideas or lessons the story is trying to communicate to readers.
A method I use is, sum up the piece you just read with one word. For an example I'll use is love. Then take the word and think of themes that go along with it that could be relevant to the text. Try to avoid cliches like Love conquers all. A good theme is original and always has exceptions, so try not to use words like "always" and "only". Try "sometimes" or "usually". In the end you could come up with something like "Love goes beyond death", or "love fades with a challenge."
You ask yourself "What did the main character learn?" This helps you discover what's important in the story, which will be the theme.
