If it hurts, it's WRONG very very WRONG, yes you will get (relatively) mediocre results and sound pretty "badass". But that's a great way to get vocal chord nodules. What I did was push air slowly from my diaphragm (the same muscle that is used in sucking in your stomach) then start putting the throat in there SLOWLY. The SECOND you feel pain you're probably putting to much in your throat and not your diaphragm. The only problem I ever had with this was I had a bad cough for the first week when I was getting my airflow right. Just remember to take it slowly and respond what your body is telling you. It's absolutely the same as learning an instrument you can't just say "I'm gonna go do br00tal death vocals" its a slow learning process.

Death Metal is an excelent style of music.
Metal uses a type of vocals called "screaming" (im not sure why a lot of people call it screamo, screamo is not metal) these vocals consist of different types and styles of screams. Low or high growls are often used in metal and death metal. In hardcore music they often use fry screams, which are more vocally based instead of diaphram bassed like growls. Try youtube for turtorials of how to us screaming vocals. I must add, this style of music is not satanic or devil worshiping in anyway. Some bands are satanic, but it's not as common.
The one bad style of music is death metal.

Mostly it's based on overall sound, ie a band with fast, rapped vocals, a DJ and drums will mostly be called a rap group and a band using acoustic guitars and properly sung vocals in a traditional manner will be termed folk. In metal, black metal can be applied to bands sounding more like symphonic or death metal if they sing about Satanism, though.
Try Born of Osiris. I believe they are progressive.

The following is from the Wikipedia entry on "grindcore".Grindcore, often shortened to grind, is an evolution of crust punk, most commonly associated with death metal, a very different, though similarly extreme, style of music. Grindcore is characterized by heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars often showing crust punk-influenced riffs, blast beats by drummers, short songs, and a vocal style consisting of growls and higher-pitched vocals, often similar to those found in black metal. Lyrical concepts range from social and political issues to gore and horror to humor.Very GREAT/WIN Music
