Thrash Metal: Originated in the 80's. Fast crunchy riffs like

Death Metal: Hard, downtuned guitars with double bass drumming and growling vocals

Melodic Death Medal (Melodeath): Like death metal only less brutal and more catchy

Black Metal: Screaming vocals, double bass drumming, and usually dark imagery

New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM): All the bands that emerged in the 80's in the likes of

  • Judas Priest
  • Pentagram

Power Metal: Clean vocals in the style of Judas Priest, Maiden, etc. lyrics usually base around epic tales of heroism, battles, magic and the like

Metalcore: Not really "metal" but a lot of people consider it as metal. It is hardcore punk with influences from metal. Usually includes breakdowns and screaming
