Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath formed in the 60s as Earth, and in 1969 changed their name to Black Sabbath. They created heavy metal with their sludgy, doomy sound and downbeat lyrics. Since then, they have become immensely popular and gone through many lineups.

In 1960's who was the leader in black sabbath?

User Avatar
Black Sabbath is actually created in the end of 1968-th, so in the year 1960 there was no leader... Quote from the official website - " Tony Iommi & Bill Ward were in a band called Mythology (which played it's last gig on Sat Jul 13, 1968), and Geezer Butler with Ozzy were in a band called Rare Breed. Long story short, these groups broke up and the lads hooked up in 1968 to form a new band called The Polka Tulk Blues Band. (Might have also been called The Polka Tulk Electric Blues Band, but I'm not sure on that.) During this time of the band's history, they had a few names. They were known as the Polka Tulk Blues Band (at some point then, they were a six piece band, too), then just Polka Tulk, and the name that most people tend to associate them with in the 60's, Earth. Sabbath played a lot of blues back then, and did the club circuit thing while touring as Earth. That led to one of the most well known stories from this era.. Apparently, there was another band touring England with the name of Earth as well, and that led to a club booking "Black Sabbath Earth" when they meant to book the other band, which played music that was NOTHING like our lads play. Led to a very confused band and audience. It was from that gig that led the band to change their name to something that would definitely NOT be confused with something else, hence the name Black Sabbath was born. "

Why do people like Black Sabbath?

User Avatar
Because they are an outstanding band, with amazing riffs, melodies, basslines and overall tracks. They are the first heavy metal band, and were the heaviest in the world at the time - and they're still pretty heavy. They have an immensely talented guitarist and have had the best vocalists, bassists and drummers in the business. At the time, they were the darkest band around, and again even by today's standards they're fairly dark, although not in a deliberately antagonistic way. They embody the feelings of youth who feel their futures going down the drain with their doomy, sludgy sound and downbeat lyrics.

Why did James Dio leave Black Sabbath?

User Avatar
Dio quit Black Sabbath following a show in Oakland, California on 13 November 1992, one night before the band were set to appear at Osbourne's retirement show. In his words, "I was told in the middle of the tour that we would be opening for Ozzy in Los Angeles. And I said, "No. Sorry, I have more pride than that." A lot of bad things were being said from camp to camp, and it created this horrible schism. So by [the band] agreeing to play the shows in L.A. with Ozzy, that, to me, spelled out reunion. And that obviously meant the doom of that particular project." So, basically, it was a matter of pride for Ronnie.

Asked in Song Meanings, Black Sabbath

What does the song black sabbath mean?

User Avatar
First of all, Black Sabbath is a musical group, not a song. Just as a Sabbath is a religious ceremony (such as a mass or service), although the origin of the term has taken some divergence over the years from its origin meaning, a "black" Sabbath would be akin to an "evil" Sabbath or ceremony. Hence, witchcraft, etc. The idea is obviously some form of Demonic Devil Worship. This goes a step beyond mere morbid songs like Paint it Black, and White Room, which seem to involve funerals. The original members of Black Sabbath are not demonic devil worshippers, as they have been stereotyped due to their interest in themes from the occult. They have been photographed quite famously wearing rosaries or crosses around their necks on numerous occasions. The title track for Black Sabbath, "I Grimlok", can be interpreted as having a figure or demon's shadow looming over you like the Grim Reaper/angel of death. It is more of a presence or the moldy scent of old death; the finger pointing of the Grim Reaper coming to take your soul to the other side.

Asked in Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne

Why did Ozzy Osbourne got kicked out of Black Sabbath?

User Avatar
Ozzy was basically kicked out of Black Sabbath because he was too busy getting wasted on various drugs and was unable to, in the other bandmates' opinion, fully commit to the band's creative process. During some gigs, he would not be able to remember lyrics and had to improv them. I believe that it was really Tony Iommi that wanted him out the most, and Ozzy was soon asked to leave. Later, Ozzy said that he was grateful for leaving Sabbath, but at the time he locked himself away in a hotel room and continually got wasted until Sharon told him to form a new band. He found Randy Rhoads and the second chapter of his musical career began. Courtesy of Wikipedia for some of the info Also, there was mutual disenchantment going on. Ozzy's heart was no longer in Sabbath, he felt Iommi was being dictatorial, he'd quit once already, the band as a whole weren't getting on so well anymore.
