Watch your own "body language". Adopt a relaxed, informal pose. Dont sit on the other side of a desk.Smile, and chat gently at first.Give them time. Try and read their body language. Play some gentle music to start with.

if they need to talk about something, let them and respond, dont just write in a note pad, help them with it its obviously troubling them.

I'd say, make sure you are warm and inviting. Smile! Tell the client you are impressed when they have successes. My therapist was wonderful at this, and I always felt so comfortable with her. Don't take notes, record the session so you can listen to it later without writing a ton. Be unconditionally accepting.
