Counseling

Counseling means to give or receive advice and guidance involving life issues. There are many different types of counseling. Sometimes a person will seek counseling, and other times they will be ordered to take it. Counseling can involve mental health, money, legal issues, or life direction. You usually are not required to do what a counselor advises, only to take it under consideration.

How do you make a client feel at ease on a face to face counselling session?

Watch your own "body language". Adopt a relaxed, informal pose. Dont sit on the other side of a desk.Smile, and chat gently at first.Give them time. Try and read their body language. Play some gentle music to start with.

== == one thing ive had happen was when you tell them something, and its not relevant to what they are saying or the 'problem at hand' then they kind of ignore it, which will only make whatever issue the person has with it worse,

if they need to talk about something, let them and respond, dont just write in a note pad, help them with it its obviously troubling them.

I'd say, make sure you are warm and inviting. Smile! Tell the client you are impressed when they have successes. My therapist was wonderful at this, and I always felt so comfortable with her. Don't take notes, record the session so you can listen to it later without writing a ton. Be unconditionally accepting.

Can you receive a negative counseling if you have never gotten a monthly counseling in the army?

Yes, if you do something wrong you should receive a negative counseling statement even if you have never been counseled. It is the responsibility of the Non-commissioned Officers to counsel their Soldiers when they arrive to the unit and on a monthly basis, if your NCO is not doing this then he is not doing his job. Remember a counseling statement is just a form of communication between the leader and his subordinate and should be used to let you know how you are doing with regard to your overall performance both Good and Bad so don't sweat a negative counseling too much just take it as a warning and get squared away. What is the importance of confidentiality in the process of counseling?

It's maybe the most important thing in counselling because that's one of the pillars of building a safe space for the patient. The patient and the therapist build an intimate relationship and divulging things that the patient says or thinks to the outside will be seen as a betrayal(like a friend telling somebody else a secret you two shared). Then the relationship might be damaged so that sort of thing is avoided alltogheter. Also in that intimate relationship the things a patient says might not be always underestood by mainstream society so there's also an element of judgement aversion, maybe even conflict aversion depending on how far removed the things discussed are from mainstream society(for example homosexuality).
