replacement of brake light bulb-- open trunk, look on inside of back of tail,brake light housing, there are retaining plastic screw on nuts, maybe covered by trunk lining of fabric. remove retaining nuts and push housing out, have someone to press brakes if not sure of which bulb to replace. locate and twist bulb housing out.

One lifts the car on a car jack, removes the tires, remove the brake shoe, remove and replace the brake pad. Then one has to replace the brake shoe in the correct position, then put the tired back on the car.
Should be on the upper end of brake pedal

To replace the brake light on a 2000 Pontiac Montana open the trunk to reveal the housing units. Find the lights and pull the bulbs out. Replace the units.
i have a 2002 Bonneville also. and to replace the bulb you have 3 bolts inside the trunk you have to unscrew and then the whole fixture will pop out towards the outside and you will have easy access to the whole fixutre. The 1997 Pontiac brake light fuse is located in the fuse box. The brake light fuse will be labeled as the tail light fuse.
Hi, it is right above the parking brake foot lever on the bottom of the dash. You have to lie down and look up to see it. There are mor under the hood on left and right.
Drum brake I assume, the adjuster is located at the six o'clock position of the assembly when you get the drum off. The adjuster mechanisms seize up and fail after a decade or two, so get a kit for the brakes with springs and all, you won't regret it.
I had this problem on a 94 Bonneville after we had fixed the brakes. After I disconnected the battery and reconnected the light went off and the dinging stopped. Not sure if this was related or just coincidence.
The fuse box for the 1986 Bonneville is under the dashboard. The box has a small cover over it and you'll see it if you look just above the brake pedal and a little to the left.
