Chances are it is the transmission control unit (TCU). You should probably take to a qualified / reputable shop and have it scanned to be sure. I believe that auto repair stores (Advance Auto, Auto Zone, O'Reily's also offer free computer scans - if they have the hook-ups for that age of vehicle.
