Once I filled in the username and password it opens up into a folder on his server From this folder which is now open on my computer I can access any files, programs etc., which resides in the folder. I am also able to drop files, or programs in the folder for him to access. I didn't have to set up anything on my side, I have a DSL connection. This is a non-technical explanation. Hope it helps.

First clarify what service the username and password is for. It could be for various things. To edit just the content, you would need nothing but FTP access to the server. Your client could have also given you the username and password for the control panel. Since you are new, be very careful with it, since it is the control panel that handles everything to do with the site and the server as well, including activating and deactivating services such as NAMED, HTTP and some more of the sorts. If it is access to the CPanel, then you can get the FTP access credentials from there. If it is the access credentials for FTP, then you'll have to get yourself a FTP client and then access it through that. Though it could be done through CMD/SHELL, it requires that you know the FTP command set. Another word of advice. Do not replace the original files after editing.
