The timing is set by the PCM/ECM The crank position sensor located on the lower front passenger side right behind the harmonic balancer controls the firing to the plugs, while the cam position sensor located under the distributer cap controls the injector timing. These Vortec engines are a different animal. All you can do is to get the #1 cylinder on top dead center make sure that the timing mark on th crank is pointing at the notch, remove the distributer cap and make sure that the rotor is pointing at #1 and that's it there is no other adjustement, the ECM does it all.

You can set the base timing by ear good enough to get it running. But you will have to have a engine scanner to set the timing correctly. The timing is controled by the PCM. POWER TRAIN CONTROLL MODULE.
It is not "adjustable". It is set to 0 degrees with the aid of a scan tool It is not done with a timing light.

you have to pull your timing cover off and line up the timing marks on the cam gear and the crank gear auto zone.com has all the info on how to do it
