When tying a triangular bandage, the most important thing is the orientation. The short edge or the point of the triangle should be slipped under the elbow. The remaining longer edges of the triangle should be taken from the front and the back and then tied or pinned over the opposite shoulder of the injured arm. The loose piece near the elbow must be twisted and pinned to secure the elbow safely.
A triangular bandage is used as an arm sling. Or it can be used as a pad to control bleeding.
Lay out the triangular bandage, opened up, on a flat surface. There is 1 long side, and 2 shorter sides of the bandage (triangle). Where the 2 shorter sides meet, at the point, grab the point and tie a knot at the point end. When you fold the bandage in half, like it would be on a person, where you tied the knot will be the pocket for the elbow. The knot is tied at the large angle corner of the bandage a few inches forward.
Apply Sling (supports arm from below):1. Tie knot in corner of triangular bandage - place knot under elbow2. Extend bandage to support under forearm3. Take one end of bandage behind patient's neck and the other in front4. Tie off the 2 ends on back of neck w/piece of gauze to prevent irritationApply Swath (prevents movement of arm away from body):5. Wrap triangular bandage around pt.'s upper arm and torso6. Tie off under opposite armpit to secure injured arm to torso
