___________________________________________________________ Extreme sadness or depression can have serious underlaying causes. There are mental illnesses that present with depression as a symptom. If the sadness is persistent and you have thoughts of suicide, then regardless of why you have this symptom, you should seek help and not be alone no matter how much you want to be. Many people will tell you to just get over it or find something happy to remember. "Look for the silver lining." However, with clinical depression, such as with bi-polar condition, this often seems impossible and can even lead to deeper bouts of depression. Do everything you can for the things you love, forgive other people, try to help them if you can, and don't waste your life (watching tv, buying expensive clothing, etc.) And at times when you feel the saddest, listen to some music. Remember, it'll be worse before it gets better, don't look at the sadness as a handicap, look at it as an opportunity to be stronger.
It's dependent on the level of sadness. If you are simply having a bad day, and are looking for a way to cheer up, then search for things that make you happy. Listen to music, watch a movie, or simply talk to someone as words can make such a difference.
But if you had long term sadness, like depression, then your needs would be much more complex, resulting in perhaps therapy or medication.
