Modem is used to connect a PC to the internet.Generally household & offices use 2 types of modems

(i) Dial Up Modem

(ii) DSl Modem

Internet connectivity through DSL Modems is quite fast as compared to Dial up Modem.

For connecting a modem to the PC , first connect the hardware unit, then install drivers & create a dial up connection and off course obtain connection from ISP.

By modem, i presume you mean the modem that your ISP provides to you to gain your internet connection.

There is two ways you can establish a connection to a modem

Wireless:

Most computers or laptops have a built in wireless receiver that can be turned off or on at any given time. This allows you to have a totally wireless connection to the internet and your modem

Wired:

Plug an Ethernet cable into your computer or laptop, then plug the corresponding end into your modem, giving you a wired connection and access to the internet.

How you attach a modem to a computer depends on the type of modem. For instance, old dial-up modems either went inside the computer and plugged into the peripheral bus, or it sat outside and attached to a communications port -- a type of serial port. With newer modems used for DSL, cable, fiber optic, satellite dishes, etc., they are usually external, and they plug into either the LAN socket or a USB port.
