As current flows through a conductor (wire) an electromagnetic field is produced. A CT is just a coil of wire that surrounds the conductor with the current flow. The EMF produced induces a voltage in the CT and that is sensed by some type of device to determine the amount of current in the primary conductor. Usually used when a large current is fed through the primary and you want to know what that is without measuring it directly. ADDITIONAL: THE MOST NEGLECTED ANSWER SPECIALLY IN DEFINING THE PURPOSE AND USE OF INSTRUMENT Transformers (CURRENT AND POTENTIAL OR VOLTAGE TRANSFORMER) IS PROTECTION.
5P20 CT give more accuracy than PS class CT. 5P20 cant be used in unit protection. Class PS CT is a protection class ct. It is used for differtial proction, distance (UNIT)proction.
A CT becomes saturated when the induced secondary voltage is beyond the capabilities of the CT. Yes it is possible, if enough current is forced through the secondary to raise the voltage beyond the CT capability curve. Remember the CT has inherent resistance due to the secondary winding. That said, to saturate strictly based on the CT resistance is unlikely. But it is still theoretically possible.
The CT standard output is 5 amps at the rated input amps. The CT will have a marking like 400:5, 100:5, or similar, where the bigger number is the input current that will cause 5 amps to flow in the CT secondary. Divide the span by 5 to get the multiplier. For instance: CT - 400:5 400 / 5 = 80 So, if you measure, say, 3 amps from the CT, the primary current is: 3 * 80 = 240 A
CL of a CT is its accuracy class.. it is an approximate measure of the CT's accuracy. e.g. The ratio (primary to secondary current) error of a Class 1 (CL:1.0) CT is 1% at rated current
Droop CT is used to control load sharing of the reactive power b/w paralleled generators.
