in high altitude there is the same amount of O2 but there is an increase amount of atmospheric preassure, making it more difficult to acquire the same amount of O2 in every breath you take. so the body will start to hyperventilate.. creating a resp. alkalosis ( increase O2 and decrease Co2) that's why you feel lightheaded, and maybe numb or dizzy. so your body activates 2-3 BPG which is the one that regulates the movement of O2 between the RBC and the tissue. so the body will syntesize more 2-3BPG and increasing it causing the hb/O2 dissociation curve to shift to the right. which means the O2 will have more affinity to tissue.

The air at high altitudes holds less oxygen than the air closer to sea level. This can cause people to struggle to breathe and can harm people with heart and lung problems. People may also get altitude sickness at very high elevations, making them feel ill, have trouble breathing, and it eventually can kill them.

  1. At high altitudes, blood is not able to absorb as much oxygen as at sea level. The human body adapts to what is effectively oxygen deprivation by initially increasing heart rate, breathing rate, then the number of red blood cells (more hemoglobin), then density of capillaries.
