The earth orbits around the sun and if it didn't rotate as it does so we would have one day and one night per year, each lasting 6 months. The fact that the earth rotates once every 24 hours constantly presents a changing face to the sun, which is our source of light.

∙ 16y agoThe Earth's rotation causes a day, because when it rotates, and it's day time, then one half of the Earth is facing the sun, and one half is facing the mooon. When it's in the sun, it rotates, and then, it's night time. After that, when it goes to the moon all the way, then it's a new day.

∙ 11y agoThe sun with all its brightness is always out there, but it can shine on only about half of the planet at a time. So it's fortunate that the earth is spinning around. It takes one day for the earth to turn all the way around one time, so everyone on the planet between the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle gets some sunshine every day. When the sun is shining where you are, it is night on the opposite side of the world, and when it is night where you are, the other side of the world has sunshine. It's almost as if we were taking turns using the sun.
