John Dickenson of Pennsylvania led the opposition to the Declaration of Independence itself. He believed that the colonies should reconcile with Great Britain rather than break away from it. He felt the colonies could not win a war for independence against the greatest military force in the world at that time and that the colonies would be better protected from France and Spain in their colonizing attempts. Other delegates were against it only for specific reasons, like the issue of abolishing slavery.

The original Declaration of Rights and Grievances was written by the Stamp Act Congress in 1765. It raised fourteen objections to British policies and called upon King George and Parliament to address the complaints of the colonists.Another document called the "Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress" was written by the First Continental Congress 9 years later in 1774, and is also referred to as the Declaration of Rights and Grievances. This document was written in response to the Intolerable Acts (Coercive Acts) and more closely resembled the grievances of the Declaration of Independence (1776).

It depends. There were several individuals who opposed independence, but the group of opposition as a whole was called Loyalists or Tories. They were mostly the rich, educated, and affluent members of society.
