He ran a very effective campaign, making use of the internet, reaching out to young voters, and mobilizing the large number of Americans who were tired of eight years of Bush's policies and were ready for something new.
Over the years, Barack Obama has learned to be a very effective politician. He knows how to inspire and motivate a crowd, and he knows how to use popular culture (like Twitter and Facebook, as well as TV entertainment programs like David Letterman or Jimmy Fallon) to reach out to a younger audience. He understands what it is like to be a working-class person, because that is how he was raised, and he understands how to speak in a way that his audiences can relate to.
Not every politician can do this. One big problem for Mitt Romney, his challenger in the 2012 election, is that Mr. Romney was a very stiff and awkward speaker, and he never seemed comfortable. In politics, it's not always whether you have good ideas-- it's how effectively you deliver them. So, in the 2012 election, President Obama was able to persuade his audience that his challenger was an out-of-touch rich guy who only cared about the upper-class. Whether or not this was true, the president was able to make that case (helped sometimes by some things that Mr. Romney said, which enhanced the perception that he didn't understand the average person's life). Further, Mr. Obama was able to point to his accomplishments during his first term, and remind voters that Republicans in congress had stopped him from enacting most of his legislative agenda.
Some critics believe that Mr. Obama won mainly because he ran against a weak challenger. But other critics believe Mr. Romney ran a poor campaign and mainly told voters how much he was against Mr. Obama, rather than providing positive reasons for people to choose the Republican candidate. Another problem for Mr. Romney was that his party had veered very far to the right, which allowed the president to portray himself as a moderate and someone who was in no way extreme. The president's campaign also reached out much more effectively to Hispanic-American, Asian-American and African-American voters than his opponent did, assuring them that his policies would be better for them than those of Mr. Romney. So, Barack Obama persuaded voters by speaking to them in a way that showed empathy, focusing on their concerns, and presenting himself as someone who was moving the country in the right direction, even if (due to global economic problems) the economic recovery was taking a while. A majority of voters agreed that the president deserved a second term: exit polls showed they felt they could trust him more than they felt they could trust Mr. Romney.
