Normally you must be no more than 18"from the curb. You can find the exact figure in your states drivers manual.
You should park your car less than six inches away from the curb.

If you refer to the parallel parking part of the "skills" test...it is 25' long and six feet deep. To pass, you have to park within 18" of the "curb." a former WV DMV troop.
