Myelin is supplied by Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system. Myelin is essentially many layers of cell membrane formed by the multiple wrappings of Schwann cell or oligodendrocyte membranes around the axon of a neuron.

Myelin is made of lipids of proteins, but it functions slightly differently depending on where in our nervous system it's employed. Our body has a Peripheral Nervous System that branches from the spinal cord to carry information related to sensory input, while our brain's Central Nervous System determines how to act on that input. Each of these systems synthesizes myelin in a different way.

Myelin sheath comes from mesoderm. During development of brain, cells from mesoderm, invade the neurons and cover them. This is done under guidance from your genetic material. How this happens is beyond the human imagination.

What type of cells produce the myelin sheath in the central nervous system?

Oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells both produce myelin. Oligodendrocytes produce myelin in the CNS, whereas Schwann cells produce myelin in the PNS. CNS refers to central nervous system PNS refers to peripheral nervous system

Do neurotransmitters form the myelin sheath?

No, neurotransmitters do not form the myelin sheath. Myelin is formed by specialized types of glial cells called oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are released by neurons to transmit signals across synapses.
