It's not. This introduced pest has become an ecological disaster in Australia, spreading further and further south. Control has been impossible for several reasons.
1. The cane toad has no natural predators, although crows have learnt to flip the toads over and peck at the soft underbelly.
2. It breeds very quickly, and has invaded the native habitat of frogs, which simply cannot withstand its large, poisonous cousin.
3. Removal is the favoured method, but it does not work. The cane toad is its own worst enemy and major competitor, so when individuals are removed, it allows the remaining animals to thrive.
Cane toads eat anything thay can handle (eat) and have no natural enemies. They also eat rare species of other frogs for example. The toads are poisonous so Australian enemies that will attempt to eat the toad will die, including pets like cats and dogs.
Cane toads are found almost everywhere in Queensland. They have spread throughout the state, not only along the coast, but inland to the semi-arid regions of western Queensland. They have also begun to encroach South into New South Wales.
Cane toads are also prevalent in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Northern Territory, and in the far northern areas of Western Australia.
Cane toads currently occupy most of Queensland, the far north coast of New South Wales and the Top End of the Northern Territory. A distribution map can be seen at the related link below. This map shows where cane toads are currently found, as well as their anticipated spread in the near future.
The estimated current figure for cane toads in Australia is over 200 million. Because toad distribution in Australia is expanding rapidly, there is no way to get an accurate figure.

Ironically they were introduced to destroy a cane-beetle plague. But the beetles are living in cane, where the toads cannot reach them. Also, cane beetles are too small to serve as food, so the toads left the canefields and entered forrests and swamps where they eat anything they can swallow. So recently, they are a pest themselves.
